Wine Rack: Wine racks can be supplemental to any kind of wine-lover. Wine racks are great for storage, while smaller models can double as a display rack in your kitchen. There is also a greater variety of styles that wine racks come in, which gives you more freedom to decorate your kitchen the way you want to. Wine racks can be much more economical than wine refrigerators because they do not cost any energy and require little to no upkeep, unlike wine refrigerators.
The general rule when building is, the thicker the walls the better the insulation factor, the better the cellar maintains a consistent temperature. A vapor barrier and insulation is required. 6-mil plastic sheeting should be applied to the hot side of the cellar walls & ceiling. If it is impossible to apply to the outside walls then apply the vapor barrier from within the cellar. Wrap the entire cellar, walls and ceilings, in plastic, leaving it loose in-between the stud cavity so the insulation can be placed easily. Recommended MINIMUM R Factor: Walls: R 11 Ceilings: R 19
Easy accessibility removes any psychological (and physical) barriers to bringing out more bottles. Should the cellar be glass fronted, or have a glass door? This depends on how much you want others to see what you have (or do not have!). It is all really a matter of personal preference and lifestyle. Advances in glass technology have made it possible for double glazed glass walls or doors to be used without the exterior becoming clouded by condensation, especially liable if the livingdining room is not kept air conditioned around the clock. Incidentally, double glazing is very expensive.
As well as providing more than ample storage space, a wine cellar lets you showcase your passion and can even double up as a place to entertain guests and fellow oenophiles in the comfort of your own home. Before you get carried away with the beautiful design potential for your wine cellar, however, don’t forget the real reason for it to keep your wine in the best possible condition and preserve the quality and unique flavours in your collection for many years to come.
